Why Do Stink Bugs Smell?
Of all the pests that can make their way into your home, stink bugs are probably at the bottom of your worry-list. They are harmless, slow-moving, and not as creepy as other insects you might spot indoors. That doesn’t mean they’re welcome though because boy, oh boy! do stink bugs smell.
Why Do Stink Bugs Smell?
Stink bugs smell because they are stressed out! Think of this smell like a skunk spraying. When the stink bug feels threatened, it releases an unpleasant and pungent smell from glands located on the abdomen.
We often have people ask if crushing a stink bug attracts others. Good news! It generally does not.
DIY Ways to Get Stink Bugs Out
Stink bugs come indoors seeking relief from the cold winter months, and you’ll often find them huddled together for warmth. Luckily, there are a few DIY ways to get them out:
- Trap Them in a Cup: If you would rather not kill them, you can use the catch-and-release method. Grab a container when you see one, and place it over the insect. Slip a piece of paper under it to create a lid, then release it outside.
- Dog Poop Bags: Dog owners will know this trick! Grab a doggy bag, and use it like a glove. Gently glide the bag over the stink bug to prevent any smell, then quickly close and tie it. Then dispose of the bag, preferably in an outdoor trash can.
- Soapy Water: This trick gives you the option to save the stink bug or get rid of it forever. Put dish detergent in a container of water and simply flick the bug inside. They’ll sink to the bottom, and you can let them drown or take the water outside and dump it out near the curb to allow the insect to live.
