Signs of Cockroaches That Indicate an Infestation

Finding Cockroach Eggs. While varying by species, many cockroach eggs are tiny and start out white, darkening and hardening with time. When you spot them, take steps immediately! Eggs hatch within 24 to 38 days, and you know there are more around you haven’t found yet. Just one female German cockroach and her offspring can fill your home with more than 30,000 cockroaches in just a single year.

A Musty Smell. Are you smelling something funky? People describe the roach odor as musty and oily which only gets worse as the infestation grows. In extreme cases, the food in a home might even start to have a distinct taste.

Allergy Flair Ups. Cockroaches are not simply a nuisance; they can cause health problems. Millions of people are actually allergic to cockroaches. Sometimes these allergies are so severe that you might not even need to be in direct contact with a cockroach or their feces to trigger an allergic reaction.

Seeing Feces. Unless you’re putting coffee grinds in random places around your home, those small piles are an indication of a pest problem. Many pests have feces that look like this, so you’ll need to do more digging to discover which bug you’re dealing with.

Seeing a Cockroach. Spotting a cockroach is a major warning sign you have an infestation. Unlike recluse pests like spiders, when you see one cockroach, you can be confident there are more nearby. Cockroaches are large, measuring about 1/2″ to 1″ and even bigger in some cases. You certainly aren’t going to miss it if you run into one!
